About CMC Steel Alabama

Mission Statement

We Will Provide High-Quality Steel Products and Services:

  • Exceeding the requirements of our internal and external customers,

  • Working in an environment where the dignity of the individual is not compromised,

  • Producing profits to grow our Company,

  • Yielding a fair return to our stockholders and stakeholders,

  • Promoting pride, satisfaction and fun while doing it.

Safety First!

We believe

  • That each individual must take charge of his or her own safety at CMC Steel Alabama.

  • That no amount of production is worth any amount of risk to the well being of our people.

  • That we can reach our production goals only through safe work practices and ongoing safety training.

  • That the safe way is the best way to do any job in our plant.

  • That injuries can be avoided if we observe reasonable caution and use good judgment in performing our jobs.

  • That individuals will develop a "sixth sense" of safety awareness if they make safety the most important part of everything they do.

A Glimpse At Our History

Our plant became part of the Commercial Metals Company and its Steel Group in December 1983 with the purchase of a Connors Steel plant in Birmingham after it had been closed. Birmingham was selected as the site for the Steel Group's second steel mill after much study and research and with the cooperation of the Birmingham community through its Industrial Development Board and City Council.  We are a "neighborhood" industry acquiring our manpower, scrap, and other materials from the local area.  We market our products primarily in the southeast and increase the Steel Group's scope of services to customers in this region.

Since we began operating our facility, we have made many dramatic changes and upgrades.  Included are new stands in the rolling mill, a DC furnace, an LMS station, a 4-strand caster, additional warehouse space, and replacement of our cooling bed and finishing equipment.

The CMC Steel Alabama People Program

The philosophy of CMC Steel Alabama is the philosophy of our Founder and Chairman, Marvin Selig, who established the Company upon four basic principles.  They are:

  • Dignity of the Individual - Each employee is an individual with unique qualities who must be treated with dignity and respect.

  • Mutual Respect - The Company's management respects the dignity, rights, and privileges of its people and expects the same from them.

  • Understanding the Profit Motive - All employees must know and understand that the Company's prime objective is to earn a profit from its operations, and every steelmaker must contribute to that objective.

  • Importance of the Supervisor - CMC Steel Alabama believes that its supervisors are the key to the success of its steelmakers and is dedicated to creating an atmosphere conducive to their growth, development, and recognition.

People Did It

Our Steel Group companies were founded by one man, but it was built by many men and women who mirror the characteristics that make dreams come true -- daring, discipline, dedication, and determination -- Men and women who have earned the right to be called "World Class Steelmakers".

CMC Steel Alabama believes in people.  We recognize that through the efforts of individuals our business exists today.  Some think of a steel mill as a complex of large buildings and machinery.  We think of CMC Steel Alabama as people because our buildings, our machines, and our equipment are nothing without the people who operate this plant.  From its beginning, the Company has recognized and emphasized the value of its people -- dedicated men and women contributing their individual talents and abilities to a winning team effort.
